Regardless of the valiant efforts of both bystanders and the emergency services, this man tragically expired. Who knows whether he could have been saved had an automated external device been available and somebody present had attended CPR classes and knew how to use it?

One death is one death too many and this incident, as well as several like it, should be enough proof that every sports ground should be equipped with an automated external defibrillator. The public should have access to these life saving devices in all public locations where large numbers of people are sometimes present or those susceptible to a cardiac arrest. Some people may say that if you are healthy enough to play hockey you are not at serious risk but the statistics prove differently. There are often no symptoms of heart disease and anyone could be the next sufferer.
